Cortex IT is the company behind BackupAssist, which makes
backups and data protection simple by performing automatic,
scheduled backups of Windows Servers. With solutions for both
local and Internet-based backup, the ability to back up everything
from individual files to complete servers (including Active Directory,
Exchange and SQL) – both physical and virtual – and support for
a wide range of backup devices, BackupAssist is specifically suited
(and affordable) for small and medium sized businesses says Linus
Chang, Cortex IT founder and CEO.
With a background in computer
programming, Linus founded Cortex I.T.
Pty Ltd in 2001 with the vision of
becoming a leader in backup solutions
for small and medium-sized businesses.
Prior to founding Cortex IT, he worked in
consulting and engineering roles for
some of Australia's best known
organizations - BHP, Telstra and yooralla
and Monash University, in roles varying
from analyst programmer to team
leader. In his youth, Linus was one of
Australia's foremost computer
programmers, even representing
Australia at international competition
level. "I found that there was a real need
for easier to use, and more affordable
backup solutions," he comments. He
goes on to explain that what they've
basically done at Cortex IT is leverage
the strengths of existing backupsolutions in one product, which they
then enhanced with management
features to create a complete package
which they market as BackupAssist.
Now, with sales in 93 countries,
BackupAssist is the backup software
package of choice for thousands of
businesses, schools, governments and
non-profits. Cortex IT sells online and
through IT consultants that have joined
its global reseller programme.
The company this year launched a new
addition to BackupAssist to make
Hyper-V products easier and more
affordable for SMBs. According to a
company statement, Windows Hyper-V
is an attractive option for SMBs, because
it reduces hardware and running costs
and provides an easier way to integrate
components in specialized IT system
setups. However, backing up Windows
Hyper-V environments can be difficult
and expensive, making it unsuitable for
SMBs. Cortex IT's new BackupAssist
Hyper-V Solution addresses this issue by
simplifying and automating vital data
protection functions for Windows
Hyper-V and significantly reducing
ongoing labour and maintenance costs.
Linus says they've been getting
excellent feedback on the Hyper-V
solution. "The economic downturn is
favouring us really as it inspires people
to evaluate their legacy backup product
and to come to the conclusion that the
maintenance costs of that product alone
are higher than our product altogether."
The challenge for Cortex IT from a
technological perspective, he adds, is to
address the issues resulting from the
trend for more and more data being
generated, often in multiple server
environments. "To resolve these issues
is a priority for us. We also have
translations in German and French, with
Italian coming soon, available through
our distributors. Distributor enquiries in
other countries are welcome."
